The band that got the most earshare in the last quarter of the year was, easily, The Decemberists.

The Decemberists’ latest album, The Crane Wife, could be the most moving album of the past few years. Their debut on a major label, The Crane Wife maintains the bands unique and beautiful sound but pairs it with increased production quality.

I don’t think a day has gone by since its release that I haven’t found myself wanting to listen to at least one of the tracks. The Crane Wife Parts 1&2 and 3 are great, The Perfect Crime #2 has an addictive quality to it, O Valencia! continues to be one of my favourites… actually, the entire album is worth listening to (ironically, the lead single, Summersong, may be the weakest track).

However, the best song on the album, and my 6th favourite song of the year is the duet Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then).

If you haven’t listened to the album I recommend you check it out. And if you ever get the opportunity to see The Decemberists live make sure you jump at the opportunity.
