Marathons, social organizations, and music.
Updates on me.
1) On October 15 I successfully finished my first marathon with a time of 3 hr and 32 min. Some highlights:
- I hit the wall like you wouldn’t believe at km 35, the infamous 21 mile mark. Frankly I wasn’t prepared for the distance (the furthest I had run before the marathon was 30 km) and I set too quick of a pace at the start of the race (I did the first half of the marathon in 1 hr 32 min). Hands down, it was the worst I’ve felt physically. Ever.
- The last km, the finish in sight and the street crowded with spectators, is a memory that will be burned in my mind forever; my proudest sporting moment. There was lots of fist pumping and crowd high-fiving to compliment my huge smile. A very big thank you to Allan and Diane for showing up and taking a few seconds to celebrate with me before I crossed the finish line.
- CBC interviewed me when I finished because of two brutally bloody ankles (seriously, the visual was astonishing). Here’s a snippet of the exchange:
Interviewer: Wow. How did it feel running for 30 more km with blisters/cuts so bad?
Me: When your legs start to fail everything else doesn’t seem that bad.
Interviewer: Can you contort your leg up onto the chair and slowly pretzel your foot out of your shoe so that the camera can get a good shot?
Me: (blank stare) I think I need to go to the medical tent now.
2) Retune is building nicely. We’re assisting a few local social organizations with some projects and it has been a very positive experience to validate assumptions and start to refine the vision. I’m looking to grow the organization in the coming months – stay tuned.
3) A great song from a great movie.
4) You wouldn’t believe how many ‘comedians’ I’ve had stare into my eyes with bug eyes followed with a “contagious” laugh. Hilarious everyone… hilarious.

2007 Goals: Earn the Right to Visit Heartbreak Hill at Disruptive Thoughts added these pithy words on Jan 02 07 at 10:47 pm[…] A bit scary to write it, but after finishing my first marathon with a time of 3:32 and a split of 1:32, I feel that if I follow a realistic training schedule and eat better that I’ll be able to make a push for the qualifying time (which will be ~ 3:10). Ashley Cecil added these pithy words on Nov 02 06 at 5:56 amCongratulations. I had a very brief running career that topped out at a 10miler, so I’m in awe of marathon runners. Are you guys human?
Fraser added these pithy words on Nov 02 06 at 7:58 amThanks Ashley. We’re definitely human. Maybe a bit insane… but definitely human. It’s funny how slippery the slope is - 10 km becomes 15 with a bit more training which becomes 20. And on and on. (Actually, that doesn’t sound that easy at all, does it?)
