Yeah, yeah — it’s been over 2 weeks since I’ve really written anything. I’ve had an amazingly good few weeks spending too much time enjoying family, friends, work, the beautiful summer we’re having, Edmonton for a brief weekend, and a long weekend camping in the Muskokas (probably the most beautiful place on earth this time of year).

I settled in after being away for three days and found a number of great things waiting for me online. While my writing has been slow, the internet has definitely not been boring.

Here’s some of the best that I’ve come across in a few hours of catching up (online and off):

1) To all designers I have, and will, work with: I’m sorry. I break most (all?) of these rules. You hate me when I do it but it will continue - at least I’m aware of my guilt :)

2) Seth on typefaces (And in my quest to respect typeface that began a few months ago the best article I read was this scathing rant on Arial - oh to be passionate enough to loathe a font!)

3) This could be the best story I’ve read in a month. I’ve already told it to three people and will share it with many others. A must read. (Fred does a good job producing an abridged version)

4) The Killers new single When You Were Young is up on their site. Good song - looking forward to the album.

5) And, via my sister, Justin’s new song is out (link via Chartreuse)

6) I read Kite Runner - I strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes well-written fiction. It’s haunting. I also read Fight Club and if you loved the movie the book will be even more enjoyable.

The summer of Fraser continues this week: a great week of work, dodgeball tomorrow night, dinner with my parents on Wednesday, some good runs planned, and a weekend in DC.

If you liked Fight Club you should check out Palahniuk’s other work. Invisible Monsters is incredible and his new book Haunted is also great. Those are probably my other favs of his but everything he puts out is usually quality. Kite Runner is on my list and on my shelf. Almost ready to get to it. :-)

I have read Invisible Monsters and really enjoyed it. Although I can’t totally remember it, I think I had issues with subtle similarities between the two books (if it wasn’t Invisible Monsters it was definitely another Palahniuk novel). So far I haven’t picked up Haunted, maybe I’ll add it to my to-read list… I think I haven’t yet because I’ve been hesitant about the short story format. Good luck with Kite Runner, it’s stellar.

Catching Up

Welcome to the conversation.

Hi, I'm Fraser and this is my personal site where I write about the things I'm interested in: start-up strategy, the web, music, and life.

My days are spent commercializing emerging technologies. Currently I'm helping to deliver the promise of semantic web to the consumer market at AdaptiveBlue. Previously I was at Trivaris, a Canadian seed stage investment firm.

I am a co-founder of Innovation Night, a community driven event supporting entrepreneurship in Canadian and US cities.
