Updated Site

Apr 23 2006 Published by under General

Updated to WordPress 2.something. Updated theme. Checked out the slick new site. And proceeded to have a heart attack as I saw “Fatal error: Cannot redeclare k2info() …….” instead of my site. Some guidance from the WordPress/K2 community talked me off the ledge as we fixed the issue.

Breaking my rule of content over form I decided to adopt a new theme, Ben Gray’s beautiful Unsleepable.

7 Quick Thoughts Round 2

Apr 19 2006 Published by under General

1) I chuckled when I first heard ‘jumped the shark’. But am now tired of it. The term itself has, well, errm…. jumped the shark. [nice to see in that last one that the new editor of Wonkette is still on the ball]. We need a new term that means the same thing. Creative (funny) readers — I leave this up to you. I will try to post one suggestion for everyone that is left here — maybe we can stumble onto something.

2) Heard a great throw away line in a meeting the other day. “You need to fix what’s wrong before you scale. If you don’t, you just scale the problem with you”. At the time it was a perfect thing to say.

3) Daniel I know I haven’t given a lot of attention to topics you’re interested in… my problem is that my thoughts jump all over the place. Plant a seed through email and steer me back towards VC innovation. Hope you’re doing well.

4) Martin does a nice job discussing the good and the bad (read the comments) of Jet Blue’s viral campaign.

5) A good (but long) read on the background story for Facebook.

6) I like the business model behind Bag Borrow or Steal. A Technorati search for the company produces a lot of recent posts like this (40 days ago) and a tonne of older posts like this (279 days ago).

7) Liz lays out some good reasons for link love (“The blogging version of spring would have to be link love”). As usual, the best content is in the comments: “I don’t understand the folks who hoard their links. It’s not like there’s a link account that gives interest”.

Graphic Design, New Categories, etc.

Apr 19 2006 Published by under Social Enterprise

I’m starting a social entrepreneur / volunteer thing and have a question: anyone know good (but inexpensive) graphic artists? I need a logo, colour scheme, … very very basic stuff.

I’ve checked out elance and a few other places, but they all charge more than I have.

Thought I’d ask here. The group is going to be completely volunteer and it’s going to do some very cool things; I’ll introduce you all to it in the coming weeks.

How Not to Handle Buzz and Expectations

Apr 18 2006 Published by under Media

I don’t like this move.

Here’s why:

You’re exploding in one country: Let the buzz subside. Build up the desire. Create want.

You’re mismanaged buzz killed you in the other major market: Let expectations correct – people looking for good music will discover you.

So what do you do? Shut up?

You should.

You shouldn’t speak up.

But they did.

“Arctic Monkeys have hit back at suggestions the band are being overmarketed ahead of their forthcoming EP releas… Frontman Alex Turner claims that the band are not “cashing in” on the release”

[While I don't agree with the move, I hope the songs are just as great as the album. The problem? I expect them to be just as good. Tough spot for them.]

Guest Posting

Apr 18 2006 Published by under General

I enjoyed my experience writing for Chartreuse so much that I’m going to present an offer: I’ll guest post for any of my readers. You give me the topic, I’ll provide a post with my (unique) thoughts on the subject. I’m not even going to restrict potential topics.

Zip me an email if you’re interested: fraserkelton [at] gmail [dot] com

This is an experiment, let’s see where it goes…

[I'm going to try a number of new things here, if you have any suggstions/comments of things you'd like to see just let me know]
